Description:
The Baker County Public Library is a county-wide Library District, supported by
its own tax base since 1988. The Library was established in 1901 in Baker City
and has been serving the entire county since 1961. The central branch in Baker
City is open 7 days a week, with 18,253 sq. feet of space situated along the
Powder River at the west end of Geiser Pollman Park. Among its unique features
are a drive-up window for pick-up and drop-off of materials and a glass-walled
Reading Room with beautiful views of the Powder River. Special collections are
housed in the Archive Room, Genealogy Room, and Oregon History Room. Several
study rooms and a community meeting room are available for public use. The main
community meeting room overlooks the river and has a grand piano and electric
organ for individual practice or group recitals. There are also special rooms
for Internet access, a Teen Room, and Children’s Story Room. Story Time is every
Wednesday at 10 a.m. for pre-school and elementary school-age children.
The District’s total collection offers residents and visitors to Baker County
access to over 340 magazines, 18 newspapers, 4,000 videos/DVDs, 3,500 audiobooks,
and 113,000 books. A growing digital collection includes 10 ebooks and 12 online
databases, including a downloadable audiobooks service. Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi)
service is freely available throughout the library to visitors with
wireless-capable devices.
The District also supports four branches housed in new, modern facilities to
serve the communities of Haines, Halfway, Huntington, and Richland. A branch in
Sumpter is under construction and expected to open in early 2008. Each branch is
open for 15 hours per week and provides collections of about 10,000 books,
periodicals, and multimedia. The materials are replenished regularly from the
main branch collection. All Baker County Libraries offer free, wireless Internet
(Wi-Fi) access. Items checked out at one public library in the County can be
returned to any other Baker County Library District branch.
Additional Library services include Reference/Research Assistance, Interlibrary
Loan, public fax, photocopying, and printing, microfilm readers, and public
programs and events. Special equipment such as telescopes, GPS units, decibel
meters, and MP3 players may also be available from the central library for 1
week checkout periods.
